a friend gave me a book last night, and it’s a pretty great book, from the bits that i’ve read so far.
when i first picked it up, and scanned the back of it, i noticed there was a blurb about the smell of rain on pavement. i actually know the official word to describe that, but at the time, it eluded me…
we’re in the middle of winter here, so summer almost seems like a dream, but i can distinctly remember the smell of rain, as it slowly starts pelting the hot pavement. it’s sort of a sweet smell, and one of the most awesome things in the world.
sadly, the word for this, isn’t as awesome.
The word is constructed from Greek, petra, meaning stone + ichor, the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology.
the description of the origin of the word is WAAYYY more poetic than the word itself. imagine trying to insert that word into a poem about the lazy, hot days of summer… i don’t think it would work. it’s too jarring and aggressive sounding, no?
